THE two Okehampton Squash teams enjoyed victories last week in their fixtures in the Devon Mixed Squash Leagues.
The first team played at home against Torquay 4, who had just gone top of division four. The seconds, also at home, played Crediton 2 in another closely fought contest.
The first team started with Shawn Jones, playing at number five, contesting some close games before eventually losing 3-0. Shane Vallance also lost 3-0, but was unlucky not to win the third game. Phil Kemsley played some accurate drop shots to see off his opponent 3-0. At two Arnie Searle was also too strong for his opponent, comfortably winning 3-0. The match was nicely poised at 2-2, and the fixture was decided by the string one match. Oke's Clive Marais found his form and played a tight game hitting excellent width and depth of shot to win 3-1and the fixture 3-2, for a 14-7 points victory. Oke replace Torquay 4 at the top of division four.
The second team lined up with Stuart Lord at five, who won his match 3-1, applying some deft touches. Simon McKinnel at 4 played well to overcome his opponent 3-0 although Shane Vallance and Chris Law both suffered defeats by 3-0 The fixture was decided by the match contested at number one. Ed Bewes played a tight game, applying good variation and hitting some lovely drop shots to win 3- 2. This was the first time Ed had beaten this opponent and it was particularly pleasing as it meant the team took the fixture 3-2, equating to a 14 – 9 point victory.
On February 15 Oke first team play Sidmouth in Devon Cup and on February 16 the second team play Paignton 4. Both these are home fixtures, so any support would be greatly appreciated.
