THE tiny West Devon village of Patchacott held its very first village Olympics recently.

The event was opened by Jean Wood of Beaworthy, after which the Olympic flame was carried around the village on a three and a quarter mile run by Geoff Hill, Phil Wonnacott and Lee Parsons.

At the end of the run, several children in white T-shirts donated by Active Devon joined in and ran the last 200 yards.

The games included eight events including paper javelin throwing, skittles and standing jumps. All the events were manned by volunteers Bob Balsdon, Brian Hill, Phil Wonnacott, Henry Cole, John Stevens, Harry Hassam and Andrew Wonnacott.

Medals were presented by Jean Wood and Bob Balsdon: children U11: gold, Adam Wonnacott; silver, Ryan James; bronze, George Ogborne. Adults: gold, Geoff Hill; silver, Colin Knight; bronze, Phil Wonnacott.

There was also a scarecrow Olympian competition. Gold (hurdles), Jordan Hill; silver (cyclists), Jane Wonnacott and Jessica Wonnacott; bronze (triple jumper), Heather and Isla.

The top raffle prize of a balloon ride for two people was won by Mr and Mrs Bridgey of Bude.

Jane Wonnacott, parish hall chairman, said: 'The day was a massive success due to many kind donations and lots of hard work.

'The total profit came to £1,529.15. It will all go to the running costs and renovation of Beaworthy Parish Hall.'
