HOW did a moth native to North America and Mexico, find its way to Okehampton? That is a question being asked by Okehampton sisters Lauren, seven, and Chloe Saunders, four, who found the exotic Luna moth outside their house near Okehampton Hospital last week. The moth, who lived for five days — the usual life span for this species — measured around five and a half inches across. The unusual sighting caused curiosity for former West Devon mayor Kenneth Williams who is intrigued by the insect world. Mr Williams said he had looked on the internet for more information on this type of moth and found that it is native in the southern states. He said: 'I can't think of anyone who would breed them and I think it is unlikely it had migrated. I think a chrysalis in a box of fruit is a better bet. I wonder if others have been seen?' Mr Williams would like to hear from anyone who knows anything on this find to call him on 01837 53111.
