THERE was a definite 'spring' in the steps of volunteers at Okehampton Community Garden on Saturday.
Enjoying a pleasant early spring day, volunteers and members of the garden's steering committee helped to create sturdy compost bays; relocate the existing herb wheel into a more prominent position; improve the soil quality by covering a potential growing area with a composting system called lasagne compost and plant rhubarb and bulbs.
Lin Harper, steering committee chair, said: 'We had a long list of jobs to work through and everyone just got stuck in!
'Painting tyres to use as planters was a popular choice for the children and will help to create a cheerful welcome to the garden.
'The day was punctuated with plenty of tea stops and most importantly, lots of home made cake! A big thank you to everyone that helped out and we look forward to welcoming more new faces as spring gets closer.'
The next similar event is planned for Saturday, March 21 and will be part of a national day of digging called The Big Dig.
