I REFER to Brian Gillard's letter 'We should all have voted' (June 26) in which he raises the matter of the Liberal Democrats' position on the EU constitution/treaty. This has been one of muddle from beginning to end. We should not forget that they promised in their manifesto to support a referendum on the new constitution. They then dropped this by following the Government's argument that the treaty is not the same thing as the constitution. Subsequently, Nick Clegg put out a three-line whip, insisting that his MPs abstained on the key treaty vote in the House of Commons. This order was simply ignored, with many Liberal Democrat MPs making their own decisions on how to cast their votes. To cap it all, the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords voted for the treaty, when voting against along with the Conservatives would have sunk it by two votes and done us all a favour. When people suggest that it is difficult to know what the Liberal Democrats stand for, they should scarcely be surprised at results like this. Maureen McDonald 37 Crocken Tor Road Okehampton
