OKEHAMPTON’S 2443 Squadron travelled to Par in Cornwall this Sunday with 17 cadets, along with staff and supporters to take part in the the annual Plymouth and Cornwall Wing Athletics Championships, entering four of the five age groups.

It was another excellent team performance by the squadron resulting in 2443 retaining the Championship Trophy.

Expectations were not overly high due to fielding weakened team. However, Padre Simon Bourne, the team manager, said: ’Everyone of the Cadets who travelled  gave their very best on the track or in the field events.’

Notable team contributions came from Cadet Charlie Thompson in the 1,500 metres race and Cdt Jack Lonsdale in the high jump. 

There were 16 individual event medal winners and two relay golds.  The total medal haul was four bronze, one silver and 13 golds.

Corporal Ryan Stairs won the victor ludorum with three golds; the class B boys and class D girls also won their age groups.

Cpl Stairs, Cpl C Bourne, Cdt Mansfield, Cdt E Bazeley and Cdt L Wiseman have been selected to represent the Wing Team at the South West Regional Championships later on in the season.
