BOXERS Aiden and Chantel Whiting, siblings and both members of Tavistock Boxing Club, were accompanied by experienced coaches Erik Sprangle and Grant Metters all the way to Hull to take part in the Hull Box Cup last weekend.
Aiden was the first in the ring to box against C Pearson, a local boxer. An exciting contest ensued, with Aiden using skill in adjusting his angles and good footwork to give a tremendous effort against a taller opponent.
In the end his work rate paid off as he was declared the well deserved winner.
Chantel’s bout was later in the day and her opposition was Aoife Williamson, boxing on behalf of the Leinster Female squad from Ireland.
This promised to be a good contest for Chantel and an opportunity to gauge her progress after some recent intensive training and coaching sessions.
Chantel set off at a fast pace to which Williamson had limited response.
At the end of round one Chantel was told by her coaches to up the pace to bring about an early stoppage.
Her hard training bore fruit as she responded with increased speed and power.
The referee was forced to intervene and stopped the contest in the second round in Chantel’s favour.
A long journey to Hull proved worthwhile with two bouts, two wins, two golds.
The Whiting siblings are a tremendous asset to Tavistock ABC and represent their club and town with pride.
