Carlsberg South West Peninsula division one East
Okehampton Argyle 2
Teignmouth 1
THIS was an excellent result for Argyle against a Teignmouth side sporting a scattering of ex-professionals and who were laying five points above them in the table.
The home side were missing their Marines and Navy players with the exception of keeper Craig Mulholland, but manager Stuart Cann did a magnificent job of marshalling his home based talent to put a gritty side on the field, all of whom played out of their skins.
Teignmouth showed their power in the early stages and pushed Argyle back for the opening 15 minutes but the home defence performed heroics to limit them to long shots and goalkeeper Mulholland was seldom troubled in the early stages.
Matt Mortimer and James Williams, back in the centre of the home defence, looked solid, winning the ball in the air and putting in some telling tackles, while Rob Clarke in midfield continually tackled back to disrupt the flow of the visitors' attacks.
Gradually Argyle began to pull themselves back into the match and the Teignmouth defence looked shaky against Luke Alden's powerful runs and Brad Ausden's speed, while Steve Madge put in a tremendous amount of work to hold the ball up in the visitors' half.
On 40 minutes, Alden intercepted a loose pass and raced into the Teignmouth area before firing home into the corner of the net to give Argyle the lead. This was only to last three minutes as Liam McAuley did well to get behind the home defence on the right before pulling the ball back for Carl Cliff-Brown to slot home the equaliser from close in.
Argyle started the second half in fine form and put the Teignmouth defence on the rack for the opening 15 minutes. Toby Gostling, inspirational in centre midfield, constantly changed the direction of play and spread the ball wide, while Luke Alden threatened on the left.
Argyle's Steve Madge was unlucky when he cleverly pulled the ball round his marker but was unable to direct his shot past the keeper.
Teignmouth were always dangerous on the break and came close on 65 minutes when Cliff-Brown hit the post.
Argyle took the lead on 75 minutes when a perfectly flighted right wing free kick from Gostling was superbly headed home by Matt Mortimer from eight yards. Back came Teignmouth and Okehampton had Mulholland to thank for preserving their lead as he made a series of great saves from point blank range.
In the closing minutes Teignmouth's frustration began to show and midfielder Clay Bond was dismissed for retaliation but despite the extra man, Argyle were still glad to hear the final whistle to end a fiercely contested and enthralling match.
All the home side put in a tremendous performance with Matt Mortimer outstanding at the back and Toby
