Carlsberg Peninsula league division one East
Axminster Town 0
Okehampton Argyle 5
OKEHAMPTON Argyle finished the year in style with this emphatic win against a poor Axminster side in a game played at Budleigh Salterton.
The only downside for Argyle manager Kevin Taylor was that at times his side undermined their total dominance by overplaying in front of goal and should have won by a greater margin; they also picked up three needless yellow cards which will mean suspensions in the New Year for Toby Gostling and Steve Kinsey.
Argyle started with a central midfield trio of Toby Gostling, Matt Sanders and Luke Alden, who took control of the game from the first whistle, and Ross Voaden came in for his first full start of the season.
Despite their total dominance, it took Argyle until the 20th minute to open their account when a deep cross from Tallan Burns was headed in at the far post by Roger Bonaparte.
Argyle should have had the game wrapped up by half time, but they contrived to squander a host of half chances or seemed to want to walk the ball into the goal and only led by Bonaparte's goal at the break.
Argyle were perhaps guilty of a lack of concentration due to the lack of quality from their opponents, but they came out with more purpose in the second half with Luke Alden, Ross Voaden, Roger Bonaparte and Tallan Burns all coming close to increasing their lead.
The second goal came on the hour when Luke Alden weaved his way into the Axminster penalty area and cut the ball back for Oli Crimmins to fire low into the bottom corner. Crimmins returned the favour when his cross from the opposite wing was steered home from 12 yards by Luke Alden eight minutes later.
With the game in the bag, Argyle immediately replaced Luke Alden and Toby Gostling with Steve Kinsey and Brad Ausden but continued to dominate possession as they went in search of further goals.
Argyle's fourth came in the 70th minute with Oli Crimmins again the provider as his low cross was nudged past the Axminster keeper by Roger Bonaparte for his second goal of the afternoon.
Argyle's fifth was the best goal of the game as Matt Sanders chested Corey Burns' long ball into the path of Ross Voaden and the young striker rifled the ball home from the edge of the penalty area.
Brad Ausden could have had himself a late hat trick but saw two superb shots well saved by the Axminster keeper and then after working his way into the penalty area saw another effort hit the side netting.
Axminster keeper Brett Garner was doing his best to keep the score down and produced another wonderful save to deny Chris Wills.
Despite further half chances for Tallan Burns, Oli Crimmins and Ross Voaden there was no further addition to the scoring as Argyle ran out emphatic winners which sees them finish the year in the top half
