Budden Westinsure Devon intermediate cup South Zeal 1 Beer 1 (Beer won on penalties 3-2). SOUTH Zeal came into this first round cup game flying high after last week's comprehensive victory over Pinhoe. It was also saw South Zeal's return to the Recreation Ground in their own village, for the first time in five years. Zeal started strongly with Harley Cann bossing the show from the middle of the park, with Darren Gilbert making incisive runs into the opposition's defensive channels. This bore fruit after 20 minutes, when Gilbert scored in a clinical fashion from 18 yards, after more good work from Cann in the build up. Zeal should have put the game to bed before half time, but missed a series of gilt edged chances. As it was the teams went in at half time, with Zeal one goal to the good. Beer came out for the second half with a lot more intensity and equalised 10 minutes in from a corner. Good chances were again wasted, with poor finishing, which ultimately cost Zeal dearly. Despite great performances from Harry Smith and Samuel Jones, the deadlock could not be broken in normal or extra time and the game went to a nail biting penalty shoot out. Lee Gilbert, Ben Davey, Darren Gilbert, Ryan Dennis and Eddy Jones stepped up, but unfortunately Beer's goal keeper was on fine form saving two penalties and the Beer side ran out the 3-2 winners. It was a disappointing end to the afternoon, but a great game for the spectators who took the time to come and watch the game.
