North Devon two Belstone v Holsworthy WITH one game remaining Belstone secured promotion to division one of the North Devon League last Sunday when their match against Holsworthy was abandoned two thirds of the way through thanks to a soaking from the remnants of 'Hurricane Bertha'. At the time the match was in the balance as Belstone openers Phil Woods and Scott Tremain had put on 40 runs, so that all ten wickets were in hand with another 142 required to win. However, they were behind the required run rate thanks to some accurate bowling from the nine-man Holsworthy team, particularly Cornwall county player Sam Hockin who had only conceded three runs from his first five overs. Earlier, after Richard Drake had asked Holsworthy to bat, they set off at about four-an-over and maintained that for most of the innings with useful contributions coming from Warren Rumble (17), Darren Jenkin (16) and Hockin (16). Middle-order batsman Matthew Mansbridge made the highest score with five fours in his 48, which only ended when Woods held an acrobatic overhead one-handed catch when the score was on 136. Ryan Walter chipped in at the end with 36 not out, but each time a partnership threatened to get much above 30 Belstone took a wicket, the most successful bowlers being Dan Fogerty (9-1-42-3) and Tom Pearce (9-1-31-2).
