TEN kilometres was the main distance of the week as ten Bere Alston Trekkers (BATs) travelled to Ivybridge on Saturday May 7 for the Erme Valley Harriers Ivybridge 10K.

This year’s evening race had a record number of 745 finishers. The spectacularly scenic race starts in Ivybridge Station Car Park and finishes at Ivybridge Rugby Club. The course is relatively fast, despite the steep hill from Bittaford to Moorhaven. The last 6km of the route are almost all downhill, making for a fast 2nd half of the race.

It was most certainly a fast course for the BATs, all ten achieving distance PBs, with Julie Page finishing second in her age category and Laura Newton taking 4 minutes off her previous 10K best. The BATs were Julie Page 47.54, Laura Newton 51.24, Martin Head 51.29, Lisa Birch 53.08, Alison Greaves 55.56, Frances Morgan 56.00, Mel Greaves 57.01, Laura Hogan 57.19, Jo Vella 1.06.18 and Hilary Head 1.09.34

Trekkers Philip King and Andy Cowden interpreted the term of the BATS grand prix slightly differently this week when they went to Silverstone to undertake the Silverstone 10K race which ran around the Grand Prix track. A total of 1,173 runners participated in total. Andy Cowden finished in 50.27 and Philip King in 55.27, a commendable time considering he ran the race as Darth Vader to celebrate May the 4th.

l BAT Marcia Macey completed the Neolithc Half Marathon on Salisbury plain. A charity run where funds from the race went to Wiltshire Wildlife trust. In good running conditions, Marcia completed the race in 2.01.38
