Devon E Bridestowe v Halberton and Sampford Peverell AFTER another great home victory against Cullompton last week, Bridestowe were again at home on Saturday, this time to Halberton and Sampford Peverell. After an early rain shower, Halberton won the toss and asked the home side to bat first. Bridestowe had the worst start possible, losing top run scorer Sam Ewen to Kalloway's first ball of the game, caught to mid-off. Alex Jopling joined Tom Fogerty and safely faced out the rest of the over. Tom cut well to the third man boundary and after a streaky shot to get off the mark, Jopling also began to settle. Both Kalloway and Turner were getting some joy from the pitch with some balls keeping low and others getting some lift. Tom's good early work was undone as he chipped the ball up and a low catch was taken at cover. With Bridestowe in trouble at 17-2, Mark Fogerty took to the crease. Jopling picked up a couple of boundaries off Turner and the pair saw out the opening spells. Spinners Durrant and Coles were the first change bowlers and Mark and Jopling faced out their first couple of overs weary of the turn the pitch might produce. Coles then began to miss his length as Jopling struck him for six and then four and Mark Fogerty also sent him to the boundary. The pair put on 50 together before a change in the bowling did for Jopling, as he pushed at one outside off and was caught at gully diving forward after a good 39. Chris Lavis, promoted to number five, smashed Salter over mid-on for six early in his innings. Mark joined in as they both struck the ball well down the ground, to take Bridestowe to 101-3 at drinks. Shortly after Lavis (22) was gone, sharply stumped off Salter. James Ewen was now at the crease and immediately took a liking to Coles and Salter, turning Salter (6-34-2) around the corner for consecutive fours and striking Coles (9-55-0) for six over mid-on. At 150-4 with 15 overs to go Bridestowe were looking at a score well in excess of 200. Kalloway returned though and had James well caught in the gully after a quick-fire 31. Dan Buckland joined Mark and things took a turn for the worse for the home side. Mark (33) did not get hold of a full toss and was caught at mid-off, then Dan Buckland was seen off with a good yorker before Dan Fogerty hung his bat out at a ball outside off and was caught at first slip to complete a game-changing hat-trick for Kalloway (9-38-6). Bridestowe had collapsed from 155-4 to 160-8. However, Mark Butler hit the returning Durrant (6-22-0) for a few boundaries and he and Charlie Ewen put on a good 20 before Turner returned to bowl Ewan. Jutson and Butler added a couple to the score before Butler was also bowled by Turner and Bridestowe were bowled out for 184 with eight overs still left. Tom and Dan Fogerty opened up the bowling for Bridestowe and Dan had a wicket in his first over as Blake edged the ball straight to Dan Buckland at gully. Both bowlers put pressure on Coles who was now joined by Venn. Tom Fogerty was all over Venn and found the edge on numerous occasions but the ball often split or fell the short of the slips. Coles was also riding his luck but was keeping the score ticking along at the required run rate. Lavis was also finding the edges of both batsmen but it was to no avail. Coles and Venn took the score for Halberton to 80-1 at drinks. Jopling got the breakthrough for Bridestowe as Venn was caught excellently by Dan moving across from long-off to long-on. The wicket left Halberton at 100-2 from 28 overs, with the required run rate at about five an over. Turner was the new man, striking the ball hard and straight. Lavis (9-31-0) also finished an unlucky spell and Turner took the initiative punishing a loose couple of overs from Jutson while Coles passed his 50. James took over the bowling from Jopling and managed to tie down the batsmen. However, Turner was in full flow and hit a couple of huge sixes to reach a quick 50. Dan Fogerty (8.3-1-40-1) returned and bowled with real aggression that worried Turner but the game was all-but lost. Sam Ewan did pick up the wicket of Turner, a low full toss struck high in the air and taken by James at long-on but it was too little too late and the winning runs were hit with five overs to spare to seal a 22 point victory for Halberton. This was a thoroughly disappointing way to end Bridestowe's winning streak, particularly as it was their first defeat at home in any form of cricket this season.
