Okehampton Argyle 1

Galmpton United 2

ARGYLE suffered their third league defeat in a row to Galmpton and slip to sixth place. Galmpton had to struggle for the win but this was a good performance by Okehampton and they should consider themselves unlucky not to have taken something from this game.

Brad Ausden, aged 17, had a rare appearance in the first XI due to the absence of striker Dave Youlden. He was not overawed by the occasion and played with a lot of confidence and showed enough promise to suggest that he might have a future in the number nine shirt. Another 17 year-old, Luke Alden, a regular this season, showed why he is such a talent and entertained the crowd with a spectacular display of the art of dribble and could have easily had a couple of goals with better finishing.

With Devon U18s Ben Williams playing at left back Argyle do have a youthful look to the side which augurs well for the future.

In the first half Argyle were more than a match for the highly rated visitors and carved out several good chances. Galmpton also contributed to an entertaining 45 minutes of football and the only reason it was 0-0 at the interval was down to a string of excellent saves from both goalkeepers.

Alex Warren thought he had scored for the visitors on 16 minutes but the goal was disallowed when an alert assistant noticed his shot had struck one of his team mates who was offside before going in the net

Okehampton did not start the second half strongly and struggled to keep either their shape or the ball and Galmpton took advantage scoring the opener on 55 minutes with a well taken diving header by Steve Bowker, giving goalkeeper Geering no chance. Argyle responded well but 10 minutes later a rare mistake by Geering, saw a tame left foot shot from Chris Hooper slip underneath his body to give Galmpton a two goal cushion.

Argyle spent the rest of the game camped in the Galmpton half but could not capitalise on all the possession. Although on 85 minutes another Alden virtuoso display in the penalty box saw his cross handled by a defender and Oke man of the match Matt Mortimer reduced the deficit from the penalty spot sending the Galmpton keeper the wrong way. Unfortunately for all the home sides efforts they could not grab an equaliser and it was a relieved Galmpton team at the final whistle.

Okehampton are hoping for a top six finish and are the surprise package in the East Division this season but it will be a difficult task as their next four fixtures are all against teams above them in the league.

n This week Argyle are at home to Stoke Gabriel while the seconds are away to Lapford. 3pm kick-offs.
