OKEHAMPTON Hockey Club held their end of season awards evening at Hatherleigh Community Centre. All the teams and the junior section of the club were well represented with 140 members attending with OCRA chairman Christine Marsh presenting the awards.
The junior section has been well attended this season averaging between 70 and 80 children at the Saturday morning training sessions. Head coach Richard Jones thanked all the Saturday morning coaches and volunteers for their help and commitment.
The club has entered U12 girls and boys teams into the Devon U12 festivals held throughout the season and U14 girls' and boys teams into the Devon U14 leagues, hosting several of these fixtures in Okehampton.
The U12 girls player of the season was presented to the team captain Izzy Rowlands and the boys' award went to Ben Jones. The club entered two girls teams into the U14s league. Molly Marvin was the 'A' team Player of the season and Sophie Mugliston took the 'B' team player while Will Cunningham was awarded the U14 boys player. The overall girls trophy, presented for not only playing ability but also attitude and commitment, went to Freya Weaver and the boys' trophy was awarded to Will Ash.
Ladies' first team captain Kim Davey reflected on a mixed season with the team narrowly losing several games by one goal but playing some of their best hockey in the Devon Cup, eventually losing to Teign, who play a league higher.
The ladies' first team player of the season was awarded to Katy Adams with Ailsa Gibb being presented with the most improved player award. Jo Moppett again claimed the highest goal scorer award.
Ladies' second team captain Rochelle Woolacott was proud of the second team's performance, narrowly missing out on promotion but seeing the team grow in confidence throughout the season.
The ladies' seconds team player of the season was awarded to Anna Speak with goalkeeper Alice Wiseman being the most improved player. Alex Collins was presented with the highest goal scorer award.
This season the ladies had set up an occasional third team who had played fixtures against similar teams on Sundays. Their player of the season was awarded to Anna Luxton. The team has been so committed and enthusiastic that they have entered into the West Women's League for next season. The ladies' club member of the season award went to their chairman Sandy Douglas for all her hard work throughout the year and the Joan Pauley Award was presented to Jane Jones.
The men's first team captain Mark Parsons praised his team for their season with some outstanding results against tough opposition.
A special award was given to talented young player Sam Whalley for his contribution to the game but the captain's player of the season was awarded to Josh Speak and the player's player going to Luke Liversage. The most improved player of the season was shared between two talented young players – Ross Davidson and Jack Watson.
Brett Lawson, the second team captain, was delighted that his unbeaten team had gained promotion winning the Davis Wood Hockey South West two league.
The captain's player of the season was awarded to Jake Lloyd with the player's player going to Alex Osman and George Morgan was given the most improved player award.
The men's club member of the season was awarded to the first team goalkeeper and successful goalkeeper coach Andy Harvey.
The club thanked all those who had umpired for the teams throughout the season and a new 'club umpire' award was presented to Amanda Sim.
Club chairman John Jarvis thanked everyone who had contributed to the club throughout the season and praised the club for gaining their England Hockey Club accreditation for the third time, showing the high standards that the club has achieved.
