IN division one of the Okehampton and District Table Tennis League this week, Anchorage A were at home to Bridestowe.
The visitors went 2-0 ahead with Mark Fogarty beating Dave Vanstone and Mark Tancock beating Malcolm Hopkins. Fogarty and Tancock both went on to score maximums. Anchorage’s Colin Jones saved the whitewash by beating Phil Down 14-12 in the fourth leg.
Bridestowe also played Okehampton C. Bridestowe were in top form and won the match 10-0 with Mark Tancock, Phil Down and Mark Fogerty all claiming maximums.
Okehampton A were at home against club rivals Okehampton D. Steve Tyler won the first for the A side against Sarah Jackson. Luke Bennett levelled for the D team against John Squire and Mari Baldwin followed her team mate by beating Karen Stephenson. Squire then beat Jackson for 2-2. Tyler won the next against Baldwin and went on to complete his maximum.
In a nip and tuck match, Bennett and Jackson each beat Stephenson but Baldwin could not stop Squire so the A team completed the singles 5-4 ahead. Tyler and Stephenson then combined to take the doubles against Jackson and Baldwin for an eventual 6-4 win for the A side.
In division two, Gunnislake A played Milton Abbot. Tom Doidge won the first against Mike Kinger and went on to complete his 11th maximum of the season. George Anderson won the next coming back from 2-0 down in a hard fought 8-11, 8-11, 12-10, 13-11, 11-4 against Michael Alexander.
Tim Westcott won the next for Milton Abbot in another close match, taking the fifth leg 11-6 and went on to complete his eighth maximum. Jack Flockton saved his side from the whitewash with Anderson not quite able to pull off another recovery from 2-0 down with the fifth leg going 11-8 in Flockton’s favour. Milton Abbot went on to take the doubles for a 9-1 win to keep them top of the division.
Gunnislake B were at home to Horrabridge A who could only field two players. Horrabridge’s Brendon Seward did well to score a maximum and team-mate Gill Northey took two singles. Ptolemy Beman won the only singles for Gunnislake. Seward and Northey combined to take the doubles against Beman and Ryan Taylor.
Finally, Gunnislake B were at home to Moretonhampstead. David May won the first against Penny O’Neill to put Moreton 1-0 ahead. Ryan Taylor levelled the scores in a hard fought 11-6, 11-6, 11-13, 12-14, 11-5 against Richard Underhill.
Ken Underhill won the next in four legs against Ptolemy Beman and went on to score a maximum. Beman did well to beat Richard Underhill and David May to keep his team in the running before May and Richard Underhill chalked up three more between them for Moreton. Ken Underhill and May won the doubles against Beman and Taylor for a final 7-3 win for Moretonhampstead.
