Devon A

IN a match that was vital to both sides in their battle to avoid relegation from division A it was the home side that took the honours with seven wickets to spare.

Harry Geering, the Lewdown skipper, was delighted with the result, especially, as he said, ‘it was the most inexperienced and youngest side Lewdown have put out for years.’

It was their overseas player South African Johan Wessels who ripped into the Tavistock batting with figures of 4-22.

Former Lewdown player Dave Ball hit a half century before he was out for 52 and Dave Manning also made a useful 49 and Jay Stevens 33 but Tavistock had to be content with 168 all out.

In reply Johan Wessels raced to 100 not out, supported by Mark Jordan with 21 and Phil Yeo on 27 as Lewdown comfortably reached the total and gained 20 points with 169-3.

There are just six points between them with one week to go.

It now means an anxious on Saturday for both teams with Lewdown away to third place Budleigh Salterton and Tavistock taking on mid-table Barton at the Ring.
