Devon Senior cup
Winkleigh 1
South Zeal United 4
SOUTH Zeal progressed to the fourth round of the Devon senior cup at Winkleigh on Saturday after a competent diplay against a resolute home side. Winkleigh started well and could have taken the lead on several occassions in the first 15 minutes and only two goal-line clearance from South Zeal's Lee Gilbert and several good blocks inside the penalty area kept the score level.
Eventually the visitors started to play and took the lead when Jamie Mallet crossed from the right and a good finish by Harry Geering put South Zeal one up.
The home side attacks became more spasmodic and after several near misses South Zeal went two up when a Winkleigh defender headed into his own net. Phil Evans made it 3-0 when he converted a good run and pass from Harley Cann.
South Zeal should have scored a hat-full of goals in the second half but chance after chance was missed, including a penalty. When Winkleigh came back into the game with a great finish from their centre forward the visitors started to look shaky. The three goal advantage was restored when Stuart Entwistle and Daniel Gibbs combined to set up Jamie Mallett, who hammered a shot into the net from close range to ensure that South Zeal progressed to the next round.
