OKEHAMPTON Community Recreation Association saddled up with Tavistock Wheelers to organise a cyclo-cross event in the town.

Despite the rain and the mud on Sunday, Tavistock Wheelers staged a memorable round of the South West cyclo-cross league at OCRA’S Sports’ Hub at Okehampton College.

With more than 150 competitors there were races throughout the day. Several riders from the Tavistock club gained podium positions and improved their chances of featuring in the places when the league concludes in January.

Emma Luckham was second under 12 girls, with Eva Brown in third place; Ryan Kingdon was third in the U12 boys while Joe Dix won the U14 boys with Leo White in second.

Rosie Andrews won the U16 girls with Connie McClauclin third. Lee Adams was second in the senior men’s race and Kath Fletcher, third in the women’s.

OCRA manager Stuart Lord told the Times: ‘We are working together with Tavistock Wheelers to develop cyclo-cross for children and it was good to see lots of schools from West Devon taking part.

‘It was also a great opportunity for local people to give the great sport of cyclo-cross a go. OCRA has been linking up the sport with the schools for the past four years and was part of our last Youth Games as well as holding other events for adults.

‘It was great to work with Tavistock Wheelers and I like to thank them for their effort in to arranging the event. For many of the children it was the first time they had ever tried cyclo-cross – it’s a brilliant sport and hopefully they will be back for more.’
