SUPER cyclist Andrew White from Okehampton has ridden his way to glory with two gold medals at the Invictus Games in Sydney.
The Okehampton Cycling Club (OKCC) rider topped his superb achievement at last year’s Invictus Games in Toronto, Canada, where he also brought home two medals - a gold and a silver.
On Monday morning there was no stopping the 24 year-old in the men’s road cycling IRB3 time trial as he took gold beating off the challenge of home hero Tim Grover from Australia, who took silver, and Ukrainian Denys Fishchuk, who was third for bronze.
Andrew, a former Lance Corporal in the Coldstream Guards, then went on to win the Criterium in the road cycling later in the day.
A delighted Andrew said on Forces Network: ‘I’m over the moon. The spirit in the team has been amazing today. It is a bit overwhelming if I am honest with you.’
His OKCC teammate, cycling partner and friend Josh Coyne, who himself is competing this week in the National Hillclimbing Championships, told the Times: ‘Having trained and raced with Andrew all season I never doubted he could do the business and bring back double gold. I know how hard he’s worked at this and he thoroughly deserves it. With Nigel and myself also competing in big events in the next week it’s an exciting time for BPM Coaching, the only downside of Andrew’s performances is he’s set the bar damn high for us!’
Nigel Hale-Hunter, who is off to California this week to ride in the 24-hour time trial World Championship, added: ‘A massive congratulations to Andrew; he has come so far in the last two years when he came to me with a dream to compete in the Invictus Games.
‘He has worked incredibly hard and now has three gold and one silver medal. Again massive kudos to a hard working athlete.’
