Okehampton ladies 2
Plymouth University 1
OKEHAMPTON Hockey Club ladies hosted their last league game of the season to third place Plymouth University knowing they needed a win to stay in their league.
As soon as the match was underway Okehampton piled the pressure onto the Plymouth team but the visitors responded by pushing into the Okehampton half.
Solid marking from Oke's Jane Jones, Amanda Sim, Tara Davidson, Carol Taylor and Ailsa Gibb ensured the ball was quickly forced up the pitch. With short and accurate passing the ball found its way onto the end of Captain Kim Davey's stick, who beat some of the Plymouth players; a pass to Jo Moppett, who with quick and agile stick skills, beat the last defender to slot the ball into the back of the goal.
With this 1-0 lead it gave Okehampton more confidence to play their usual game, with quick short passes.
Plymouth soon came on the attack but hard work from Hannah Whiteley, Louise Weller and Joey Drake saw the ball once again onto the sticks of the home team.
Lesley Bingham worked hard in the middle of the pitch showing her skill to send a lovely pass to Molly Petherbridge, who took a shot on the edge of the D and hit the away side's backboard.
Going into the second half Okehampton knew that Plymouth would fight hard in order to try to score and their determination soon paid off when they hit a goal past keeper Shannon Osman.
As the away side kept the pressure on, Tara Davidson worked hard in order to cut out any chances the visitors had of a shot on goal. Davidson linked up well with Anna Speak. Speak, who was the Oke player of the match, showed her range of skills in her first game for the team.
Okehampton did well to ensure that Plymouth's chance on goal were cut out and worked well as a team to see out the game with a 2-1 win.
