Carlsberg South West Peninsula League division one East
Okehampton Argyle 0
Axminster Town 0
THIS was a good point for Argyle against an Axminster side lying fourth in the table and coming off the back of four straight wins.
The home side worked hard all afternoon to keep the Tigers at bay and came close to winning the match in the second half.
Axminster started off the stronger and pushed Argyle back for the first ten minutes but ran into some resolute home defending and an in form Harry Geering in the Okehampton goal.
Gradually, the home midfield began to force their way into the game and Argyle began to gain the edge on possession with some fine passing movements putting the Axminster goal under pressure. Two quick corners in succession saw the visitors scramble the ball away but at the other end Geering was forced to make a number of fine saves as the game swung from end to end.
After the interval, the visitors began to exert more pressure on the Oke defence but the back four stood firm and Geering was unbeatable. In fact, it was Argyle who came closest to winning this game when on 70 minutes James Sowden hit the Tigers' crossbar with a 25 yard direct free kick.
Shortly afterwards, the visiting keeper was lucky to escape dismissal when he brought Brad Ausden down outside the box to prevent a goal. The hosts who lost Ausden for the remainder of the match and who are unlikely to have him fit again for their midweek match at Exmouth.
This was a well deserved point for Okehampton and both sides will probably feel that a draw reflected the possession each team enjoyed.
Harry Geering was man of the match for Argyle and James Sowden had an outstanding game in midfield in only his second match for the club. Debutant midfielder Jack English won and distributed the ball well throughout and never stopped running and Ed Squire also looked strong all afternoon.
