Brixham Villa ladies 3

ARGYLE ladies travelled to Brixham having already secured a 1-0 victory over them on the opening game of the season at Simmons Park. They knew this was going to be a tight affair and the game did not disappoint.

Okehampton were slow to come out of the blocks with Brixham pressing and looking to capitalise on their pressure. The breakthrough came when the Brixham striker got onto a long ball before Vincent bought her down in the area. The resulting penalty was duly put away.

This seemed to set a spark in the Argyle ladies who started to create chances between the forward trio of Sian Aslett, Ellis and Gilbert. The equaliser came with some good one-touch passing between Sian Aslett and Anstey, who released Ellis to score her first goal for the club.

Argyle keeper Clark-Watkins pulled off a few good saves to keep the score down but could do nothing when being lobbed for Brixham to, once again, take the lead.

The visitors had a chance to level from the spot after Ellis was fouled in the area, but the resulting penalty was saved by the Brixham goalkeeper.

With ten minutes until half time Oke equalised when Gilbert played a lovely weighted ball to Sian Aslett, whose shot hit the back of the net.

The second half started with Brixham’s forward five attacking again. Argyle changed their formation to try and combat this but Brixham were ahead for the third time in the tie when Oke’s defence failed to close down a player whose shot went into the corner of the net.

Argyle heads seemed to drop and then Gilbert was barged to the ground in the box allowing Shiv Aslett to despatch the penalty to even things up.

With the game looking like it was going to end in a draw Sian Aslett went on a mazey run and was upended just outside the area. Up stepped club captain Gilbert whose free-kick sailed over the Brixham keeper and into the net.

Brixham looked to break one last time but for a superb challenge from Anstey put an end to that break.

A couple of frantic minutes went by before the referee blew his whistle. The win gives Argyle three wins out of four in the league.
