AS always it has been a busy year on the sporting front in 2015. With so many individuals, teams and events enjoying sporting success Times Sports gives readers a reminder of some of their pictures. Here’s looking forward to 2016!
OKEHAMPTON Shooting Club’s Sharon Bartlett had a wonderful day in February when shooting in the Cornish Air Rifle and Air Pistol Championships at St Austell.
Sharon, who took up shooting after being inspired by the 2012 Olympics, competed in both the air rifle and air pistol target competitions at St Austell. She shot a personal best in winning the ladies’ 10 metre air rifle competition and another to win the ladies’ 10 metre air pistol competition.
TAVISTOCK Hockey Club men’s first team sealed the Southern two league title in February with four games to go, after a convincing 5-0 away win over Truro B.
THE high technical standards of Dragons’ students from Halwill proved to be a great asset at the seventh Chung Do Kwan Taekwon Do championships in Bristol. Four returned to Halwill in March as national champions, while two scooped silver medals, one was a bronze medallist while another received an award for bravery.
AN Okehampton motorcyclist roared to success in March at one of the sport’s famous racing circuits.
Leon Vledderan, aged 32, rode a great race to take second place at the East Midlands Racing Association Superstock 600cc championship at Mallory Park in Leicestershire.
TAVISTOCK Golf Club commemorated its 125th year. Tavistock is the oldest of all the county’s moorland courses and its existence is due to a Mr J R Divett who, together with a small group of other enthusiasts, conceived the idea of carving a course out of the heather and gorse on Whitchurch Down.
THE?sun shone in April at the Spooners and West Dartmoor Foxhounds’ Point-to-Point Steeplechases at Cherry Brook on Easter Saturday.
Hundreds of people turned out to enjoy the races, food and activties in glorious sunshine, although it was still slightly muddy.
TAVISTOCK swimmer Oliver Taverner became a British record holder in April after achieving great success at the Portsmouth Northsea Easter Festival.
The Mount Kelly pupil and swimmer, aged 13, had a superb race to break the 100 metre breaststroke British and English age group record, posting a time of 1 minute 07.98 seconds.
THE ever more popular Son-Rise Cup football tournament in May drew more than 2,000 people to Tavistock for the sporting spectacular. The football fiesta promotes awareness of autism and raises money for many local charities.
IN July Horrabridge teenager Alex Waterhouse was crowned British junior champion at the British Bouldering Championships held in Bristol.
HISTORY was made in July when Football League Two side Yeovil Town became the first full league side to make an official visit to Callington’s Ginsters Marshfield Parc.
TAVISTOCK Cricket Club hosted a charity cricket match and a family fun day in September to raise £750 for Derriford Hospital’s Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit. (NICU).
OKEHAMPTON Rugby Club did just enough to win this Devon Intermediate Cup tie in October to beat their West Devon rivals Tavistock 10-6.
OKEHAMPTON Golf Club held their annual presentation of silverware in November where a packed clubhouse saw members presented with their trophies in recognition of their achievements in 2015.
It had been a terrific year for the club with success at both club and county level.
