Devon and Exeter division three
Chagford 6
Clyst Valley Reserves 0
ON a soft pitch, Chagford maintained their place at the top of the table with an emphatic win against their lowly rivals.
Top scorer, Andrew Davis, led the way with a 15th minute lob over Johnstone. The goal settled Chagford and they started to play controlling and passing football.
Jim Wilsher doubled the hosts’ advantage with a driven long-range shot; the ball arrowing through a crowded penalty area to nestle in the net.
In the 32 minute Johnstone lobbed the goalie again as Ollie Squire finished coolly. Just before half-time, Reuben Sampson was brought down in the Valley’s penalty box and Sampson hammered home the spot-kick.
Chagford continued the onslaught in the second half but Clyst refused to capitulate and played some attractive football, without troubling the home defence too much.
Man of the match Ross Gillon was at the heart of Chagford’s determination to keep a clean-sheet, with Norman handling well when Clyst did get through.
Chances went begging at the other end until Adam White drove in the fifth goal from 25 yards.
Ben Barkwill came on for Craig Vincent and the youngster paid off the switch with an 80th minute cross-shot that found it’s way in at the far post. That signalled game over but Chagford knew they had met with game opponents who never gave up completely.
n Chagford are home to Cheriton Fitzpaine on Saturday, kick-off at 3pm.
n In Devon and Exeter division eight Chagford Reserves were spared a trip to Ottery St. Mary, their hosts failing to raise a side for this important relegation clash.
