THE Oke Croak, a traditional fell race recently resurrected by the Okehampton Running Club and sponsored by Simpkins Edwards, took place in ideal conditions with the bright sunshine giving the runners some stunning views from the open moor.

Volunteers from the North Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team were present but happily the event was completed without incident.

The group of hardy runners had to find their own way around the unmarked 10.4 mile route from Simmons Park, along Ball Hill to the moors to start the long climb up the 'goats' path' to the top of Oke Tor, turning west over East Mill Tor before a sharp climb up Yes Tor, after which it's downhill all the way to the finish in the Park.

Ceri Rees was the overall winner in 1 hour 26 minutes 12 seconds. Michael Baker was first home for the ORC in 1.41.02, with Merv Rice, just back from cycling from Land's End to Groats, in 1.48.26.

Merv ran with his daughter, Jenny, who is taking part in the local Horseman Ironman event in two week's time. Next in was Lucy Skye, second lady overall in 1.49.46. Anne Binns finished in 2.00.24. Members welcomed back Jo Daniels again after a long break — she ran with Karen Vallance — the pair posting 2.11.37.
