South Molton 7 Okehampton 43 THE first game of the new season saw the young Okehampton side travel to South Molton on a hot, sunny day, making the step up to a full size pitch and 15 a-side. From the whistle the Okehampton players were all up for the challenge, dominating the first half, with the first try scored within ten minutes from a quick tap and go, to see Greg (Forest) Haste over the line, for the first of his three well taken tries. Sustained pressure from the forwards and slick handling by the backs saw Joshua Burgoyne cross South Molton's line twice more before the end of the first half. Olly Northcott in his debut game put in some hard hitting tackles and showed his pace on the wing, gaining good ground. Matthew Denning, back after a season out, acquitted himself well in the pack. The start of the second half saw a great try from Harry Laing-Taylor, who broke three tackles, running half the length of the pitch to touchdown. To their credit, South Molton came back at the young Okehampton side with their own determined pressure. Following a resilient and prolonged period of defence from Okehampton, South Molton finally broke through with a converted try of their own. Despite tiring legs, Okehampton rounded off a successful game with a half pitch break from Will Cunningham, after eluding a couple of tackles, to cross the line just before the final whistle. Conversions came from James Close (2), Joshua Burgoyne (1) and Daniel Wonnacott (1). A great start to their season from the whole squad, many of whom were playing in new positions, who all stepped up well to the physical and mental demands of a full size pitch.
