Devon Cup
Plym Valley ladies 2
Okehampton ladies’ firsts 1
A WET Saturday saw the ladies’ first team travel to Plymouth in their Devon cup tie. Due to several last minute injuries Okehampton only took the bare 11 players but this only fired them up to work harder.
From the first pass back Okehampton moved the ball around the pitch with great linking play from their player of the match Amy Taylor, Molly Petherbridge and Sophie Whiteley. The hard work paid off as Lesley Bingham coolly beat the goalkeeper to slot the ball into the net to put them into the lead.
Plym Valley came back and won a series of short corners but Okehampton had been working on this and kept them away from Laura Bazeley’s goal until one took a deflection into the top of the net to make the score 1-1 at half time.
Okehampton kept the work rate up after half time, with Amanda Sim and Helen Dolton making some critical tackles to keep Plym Valley at bay. Great leading runs by Anna Crome and Claire Grubb opened Okehampton up to more goal scoring chances in the second half but the ball would not find the back of the net. It was Plym Valley who managed to score the winner with a strong strike from the top of the D.
A goal line save by Kim Davey, who had a great game as right back, stopped the home side increasing their lead. Emma Wiseman continued to feed the ball up the left side until the last minutes but it was not to be Okehampton’s day as it is Plym Valley who move on to the semi finals.
