IN division one of the Okehampton and District Table Tennis League this week, Okehampton D played Tavistock.
Okehampton’s Mari Baldwin won the first game against Nick Davis. Peter Hicks replied for Tavistock in a hard fought battle against Zoe Bennett, who just lost out in the fifth.
Hicks went on to score a fine maximum but had to fight all the way against Baldwin with another fifth set victory. Bennett was unlucky to lose her second singles to Davis in another ‘to-the-wire match’, 8-11 in fifth.
Covering for Tavistock and playing up from division two, Lauren Loosemore did well to beat Sarah Jackson but could not fend off either Bennett or Baldwin although she did manage to take a leg off each of them. With the score at 6-3 to Tavistock, Baldwin and Jackson won the doubles against Davis and Hicks for a 6-4 win for Tavistock.
Anchorage A played Okehampton A. This time, Connor Madge was playing up from division two to cover for the Okehampton side. Malcolm Hopkins won the first against Madge before Steve Tyler and Steve Madge came back by beating Dave Vanstone and Colin Jones. Both Tyler and Steve Madge went on to score maximums and young Connor was unlucky not to take the last singles, pushing Jones all the way to a fifth set decider. The Okehampton side also took the doubles for a 7-3 win.
In the last division one match, Anchorage B played North Wyke. Enrique Cancer-Berroya won the first against Roger Gilbert and went on to score a fine maximum for his North Wyke team.
The Anchorage team of Gilbert, Dave Wilson and Colin Brooker took two singles each and Gilbert and Brooker combined to take the doubles giving Anchorage B a 7-3 win.
In the only division two match, Moretonhampstead were at home to Horrabridge B. The visitor’s Myles Pinkney won the first against young Jude Shea in a hard fought game with Pinkney just taking the last leg 11-9. David May levelled for Moreton against Matthew Dowie and went on to score a convincing maximum.
James May was taken all the way in a fine hitting and counter-hitting game against Alex Cunningham, before eventually winning 12-14, 12-10, 12-10, 6-11, 11-5. James also won against Dowie but could not hold off Pinkney in another fifth leg tussle, this time with Pinkney winning 11-9 in the fifth. Shea did well to beat Dowie and Cunningham and teamed up with James May to take the doubles for a hard fought 8-2 win for the Moretonhampstead side.
