OKEHAMPTON Argyle got their pre-season campaign under way with a home game against South West Peninsula League premier division side Bovey Tracey on Saturday. Both teams under new management and keen to impress, they provided a good afternoon's entertainment for a decent sized crowd at Simmons Park. Argyle started a little hesitantly and it was the visitors who took a third minute lead courtesy of a close range header from Lewis Hayward. For the first 10 minutes it looked like Bovey Tracey would run riot, but once Oke had weathered the early storm they settled and created a few chances of their own with Brad Ausden, Dean Jones and Ed Squire all going close. Bovey Tracey increased their lead on 35 minutes following a defensive mix up which allowed Lewis Hayward to race clear and fire home his second of the afternoon as Bovey went in 2-0 up at the break. The second half was a lot more even, with Argyle hitting the bar twice and having another Ed Squire effort cleared off the line in a 15-20 minute period of dominance. The visitors took their foot off the pedal but Argyle failed to capitalise on their best period in the game. Bovey finished the game strongly almost adding a third in the closing stages. With four new players in the starting XI and two more introduced in the second half there were plenty of positives for new manager Kevin Taylor to take forward into the remaining friendlies to come. 'The response I've had so far has been great', said Taylor. 'We've had really good numbers in training and all the lads have worked well. I could easily have picked a larger squad, but with several unavailable and the seconds in action after us, the 16 on show, after a dodgy opening period, put in a good shift.' Oke Argyle's second ran out comfortable 8-1 winners against North Tawton courtesy of goals from Ross Voaden (2, 1pen), Adam Mortimer (2), John Coakley (2), Chey Taylor and an own goal.
