THE 2016/17 season, in the Okehampton and District Table Tennis League started with the Bill Fogarty Trophy played in October. The winners were Bridestowe who beat Okehampton C 7-2. In the consolation final, Anchorage B beat Horrabridge A 7-2.
The league season started October 31.
Last season’s champions Tavistock started with a 7-3 win over Okehampton C.
Angharad Beman, who moved up from division two, scored a fine maximum. Roger Bowkett won two games while Cameron Brooking beat Roger 11-7 in the fourth leg and went on to win his second against Nick Davis. Zoe Bennett also beat Nick Davis.
Division two winners from last year, Anchorage A had a convincing 9-1 win over North Wyke. Steve Granger saved the whitewash when he beat Dave Vanstone. Malcolm Hopkins and Colin Jones scored fine maximums. In the last singles, Steve took Malcolm to a fifth leg decider. Malcolm and Dave won the doubles after losing the first two legs against Steve and Yashu Zhang.
In division two, Milton Abbot started the season with a convincing 9-1 win over Moretonhampstead - Tom Doidge and Tim Westcott scored fine maximums.
Ken Underhill saved the whitewash beating George Anderson. George also had a fifth leg win against James May, who won the first two legs 11-7, 11-7 but George fought back winning the next three legs 12-10, 17-15, 11-1. Doidge and Anderson beat Underhill and May 11-9, 11-9, 11-9 for a 9-1 win.
Okehampton E played Gunnislake A. Alfie East had a hard fought match against Michael Kinger who won the first two legs 11-7, 11-5. East came back winning the next two 11-8, 11-8 with Michael winning the final game 14-12. Kinger went on to score a fine maximum and East won his remaining two games.
Lauren Loosemore won her first to Jack Flockton and won her next against Michael Alexander. East and Loosemore lost the doubles against Kinger and Flocton for a 5-5 draw.
The next match was Okehampton G against Horrabridge A. Okehampton could only field two players, Will Ash and Morgan Holt (who won two singles). Crispin Jordan won two singles for Horrabridge and Jill Northey won one. Crispin and Jill won the doubles for a 7-3 win for Horrabridge.
In the last division two match Okehampton F played Horrabridge B. Myles Pinkney put Horrabridge 1-0 ahead when he beat Frank Cockburn in the fourth leg and went on to complete a fine maximum.
Connor Madge levelled at 1-1 beating Matthew Dowie. Tom Madge took Alex Cunningham to a fifth leg decider just losing out 10-12 in the fifth. With the score at 4-4, Frank secured his second success, winning 11-4 in the fifth leg.
Myles and Alex won the doubles against Frank and Connor for a 5-5 draw.
