Truro 2
Okehampton 5
OKEHAMPTON travelled to Truro in torrential rain for their third league game of the season, determined to gain their first three points on the road.
Fortunately the sun came out for the start of the game and with a zippy pitch it was perfect conditions for a great game of hockey.
The opening 10 minutes were even with both midfields cancelling each other out. After this Okehampton began to settle on the ball and Luke Miller started to dictate play, ably supported by Nick Luxton and Joff Stephens as the team began to dominate play.
Sam Whalley made the breakthrough with a sweetly stuck shot leaving the hapless keeper stranded.
Within moments Okehampton penetrated the D and we’re rewarded with their second goal by top scorer Miller. Jack Watson and Jayden Read continued to press Truro down the wings but their crosses did not unsettle the home defence.
The Okehampton defensive line looked solid in the first half and keeper Morgan was rarely troubled apart from one save and a goal line clearance from man of the match, Simon Bourne.
Following excellent interplay Okehampton went into the half time break 3-0 up following a converted penalty corner, thanks to a precision pass from Miller for James Rogers to calmly slot home.
It was Truro who started brightest in the second half and made a dream start, cutting their deficit straight away.
Stirred into action Oke’s response was instant and skipper Josh Speak took the ball down the left wing, cut into the D and slipped it into the goal, with a little help from the defender’s stick.
The game then opened up but calm heads at the Oke back by Ross Davidson and Rob Hall dealt with every threat that came their way. Sustained pressure and an overload into the D did result in Truro scoring their second - a well taken, unstoppable goal.
Okehampton regained their composure and held onto possession of the ball well for the remainder of the match. The sustained pressure eventually told and Whalley converted his second following sublime passing from defence to attack.
