Okehampton and District Tennis Club summer season began on Tuesday at the tennis courts next to Okehampton College All Weather Pitch.

The club is looking forward to a busy and successful season. With the opening of the Okehampton Hub Pavilion during the summer the club expect to attract new members, both adults and juniors.

New training equipment and special junior tennis balls have already been bought — thanks to donations to the club.

Okehampton and District Lions Club donated £300 for the club to purchase new junior rackets.

As children grow and get older they need different size rackets to practice with and the club maintains a stock of these for the children to use.

The club hold adult sessions every Tuesday evening starting at 6pm and on Saturday afternoons from 20pm. These sessions are a combination of competitive and social tennis and players of all standards are welcome.

Saturday mornings are set aside for the club's successful junior sessions for younger children from four to 11 years of age.

Thursday afternoons from 3.30pm to 5pm are for older children aged from 11 to 16 years-old. All sessions are supervised by fully qualified tennis coaches.

Club chairman David Carter thanked the Lions Club and to all the organisations who have donated money to the club.

He said: 'The club tries to keep charges to the juniors and their parents to the absolute minimum and these donations help to achieve this. All junior coaches and other helpers give their time without charge.'
