THE Okehampton Running Club's Great West Fell Run, was a great success with all runners beating the heavy rain which fell at the end.
This is a tough five mile fell race, sponsored by Simpkins Edwards, from Meldon Dam starting with a steep climb up Longstone Hill to Yes Tor, on to High Willhays, the highest point on Dartmoor, before dropping down to Black Tor and back to the finish. Volunteers from the North Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team were present but thankfully all the runners arrived home safely.
A new course record was set by Tim Lenton from Axe Valley Runners who was the overall winner in 37 minutes 38 seconds. Nick Seccombe was the first ORC member home in 49.10, followed by Lucy Skye 50.43 (second lady) and Monica Richards 50.59 (third lady) Mike Seward 52.49, Darren Duffy 53.46, Jane Jackson 56.28 (second F50), John Binns (57.12), Anne Binns 57.15 (first female 40 plus), Chris Aylen 57.24, Cathy Carey and Karen Vallance, Liz Ash 1.03.35, Mags Jarvis 1.03.55, Abby Metherell 1.06.14, Beverley Dennis and Beccy Simmons 1.13.24.
A contingent of Inwardleigh ORCs took part in the Cornwood 10K and Totnes 10K races. At Cornwood Danielle Fulford-Brown completed in 57.27 just in front of husband, Chris, in 59.03 and at the Totnes 10K Marilyn Cooper came second in the FV55 category completing in 53.47 — a United Kingdom Athletics silver award time. Jessica Corcoran, another member just back from injury, was delighted to knock an impressive ten minutes off her time in the same race three years ago posting 1.06.20.
Rob Kelly had a PB in the third race of the Run Exe Summer 5k series with a time of 18.29 – a gold uka award
There is another chance to run up Yes Tor at the Oke Croak on Saturday, August 31, starting at 11pm from Simmons Park. For a shorter race there is the Sourton Tors Race on Wednesday, September 4 at 7pm meeting at Bearslake Inn. Entries for either race can be taken on the day.
