OKEHAMPTON Running Club’s Great West Fell Run was a huge success, attracting entries from clubs from far and wide and well supported by neigh-bouring Tavistock AC and Plymouth Harriers.
All the runners enjoyed tackling the rugged five mile route over the two highest tors on Dartmoor. The race is self navigated and various paths were taken to get to the top of Yes Tor, also to come down off High Willhays.
Some of the runners found a few of Dartmoor’s bogs, but happily everyone came home safely.
First place went to ORC’s Will Lamerton, who was the youngest to take part. Will, at just 16, is showing great talent and fought off a strong challenge from experienced fell runners to win from Jamie Luxmoore of Ambleside AC and James Best of Tavistock AC.
ORC times: Will Lamerton 39 minutes 50 seconds, Mike Baker 48.36, Merv Rice 52.44, Lucy Skye 56.07, Jason Ewing 58.34, Charlotte Collyer 1.02.57, Jo Fletcher, Jayne Peachey, Karen Vallance and Kerry Morashti all 1.04.28, Sarah Haigh 1.05.43, Janet White and Christine Fritsch 1.09.05.
Four ORC ladies ran the Exeter 10k, a mid week evening race over a fast two lap course. Conditions were good although a headwind on the homeward lap was not helpful. Charlotte Radnor led the way for ORC posting 48.08, followed by Marilyn Cooper in 52.04. Heidi Wills and Carole Cornwall were delighted to get personal bests by an impressive five minutes to finish in 56.40 and 56.42 — putting their success down to not looking at their watches at all during the run!
Roger Voaden took a step back in distance having completed no less than ten marathons since February, to run the Indian Queens Half Marathon, one of the Cornish Grand Prix series. He finished 26th from a field of over 550 runners in 1.24.38. Andrew Thorne also took part completing in 1.48.29.
The next club race is the Oke Croak on August 29 at 11am from Simmons Park. This is a fell race of 10.4 miles with 2,000 feet of ascent including Yes Tor.
Entries will be taken on the day or visit www.okehamptonrunningclub.com to download an entry form.
