THE Great West Fell Run, the second of Okehampton Running Club's summer series, attracted runners from various parts of the UK. The race, from Meldon Reservoir, was won by last year's winner and course record holder, Tim Lenton of Axe Valley Runners, in 38.27 minutes. Haldon Trail Runners' Elizabeth Dyson broke the female course record, winning the ladies' section in 44.02. Liz, who works for the Met office, must have brought some good weather with her too, as the heavy showers that had been forecast never materialised, giving perfect race conditions. The five mile route to the top of Yes Tor and High Wilhays and back via Black Tor provides an ideal introduction to fell racing. Several of the field were taking advantage of the opportunity to run a fell race for the first time. ORC times: In fifth place overall Andy Vallance 41.44; in ninth, Paul Crease 43.55; Nick Seccombe 44.53, Dave Mugliston 45.24, Ben Bowler 49.54 and Jason Ewing 58.18 ORC's next race is the Oke Croak, 10.4 miles over open moorland on Saturday, August 30 at 10am.
