RICHARD Hughes, a 51-year-old retired police officer from Great Torrington who had never run a marathon before the recent London Marathon, was delighted to complete the course, in 5.44.58.
He raised £4,368 for Caudwell Children, the national charity that provides practical and emotional support to disabled children and their families. Richard, who is married with two sons, is now urging those who intend to enter next year’s VMLM to run on behalf of Caudwell Children.
He said: ‘It was an incredible experience and the support around the course was unbelievable. From the start to the finish it was continuous applause. ‘There were a few darker moments when I had to dig deep, but I just kept thinking of Caudwell Children. Knowing that the cash that I would raise by crossing the finishing line would help disabled children across Devon really spurred me on.’
Kirsten Greaves, on behalf for Caudwell Children, praised Richard’s determination to finish the race.
She said: ‘Richard’s lung busting, sinew stretching effort to raise money for Caudwell Children was truly inspirational. His commitment, dedication and willingness to put his body through the pain barrier in support of disabled children, have to be admired. On behalf of the children that we support I’d like to say a massive thank you to him.’
