FIVE small schools — Lew Trenchard, Lifton, Exbourne, Bridestowe and Boasley Cross —took part in a Small School Cross Country event at Lewdown Cricket Club on a blustery day earlier this month.

There  were two superb races with roughly 50 competitors in each.

In the girls’ race, a terrific run from Liberty Kappes of Lifton ensured that she took first place with Holly Cole from Lew Trenchard in second and Delilah Fitzpatrick from Exbourne in third. In an equally competitive boys’ race, Thomas Perkins from Bridestowe came first, with Ben Hunt from Lew Trenchard in second and Matthew Dunn from Exbourne in third.

The team competition was based on a combined score of the best three boys and the best three girls; they were as follows: 1, Lew Trenchard  A 25 points; 2, Bridestowe A, 56pts; 3, Lifton, 64pts; 4, Exbourne, 74pts; 5, Lew Trenchard B, 103pts; 6, Boasley Cross, 119pts; 7, Bridestowe B 121pts.

Mhairi McCall from the organisers OCRA, said: ‘Lew Trenchard’s greater strength in depth meant that they scored well in both races by having all their A team runners in the first ten in each race.

‘However, the biggest success was shown by the determination and achievement on all the children’s faces as they gave their all. There were lots of sprint finishes to the line as all the competitors sought to do the best for their team.’

She also thanked all the Lew Trenchard parents who helped, Lewdown Cricket Club and Owen Vanstone.
