Chagford v Babbacombe
BABBACOMBE travelled to Chagford in search of a win to enhance their promotion hopes but were frustrated during a low scoring game on the normally excellent batting wicket.
During the match there were only 153 runs scored with the loss of all 20 wickets, including eight ducks.
Chagford batted first and lost Chris Filor for 3 with the score at 11 to the overseas quick bowler Cameron Fryer, whose pace troubled the Chagford batting and he went on to dismiss Divan Marais for 15 and top scorer James Fulner for 24 to leave Chagford at 49 for 3.
Wickets fell at regular intervals with only Ben Hancox (11) and last man Del Lammonby (12) reaching double figures. Fryer finished with 3-25 and accurate slow bowling for Paul Bates (4-22) and Sam Powell (3-18) saw Chagford dismissed for only 88 in 31.1 overs.
This seemed an easy target for Babbacombe as their opening pair of South African Fryer and Mike Pugh moved the score seemingly without difficulty to 34 when Pugh was brilliantly caught by Richard Sampson for 13 off Will Lammonby, who went to immediately dismiss dangerman Andy Kingdom for a duck to leave Babbacombe at 34 for 2.
The injured Chagford skipper Del Lammonby then entered the attack, bowling off only a four yard run up. He captured the prize wicket of Fryer for 13 with the score at 39 and with inspired bowling by Lammonby (4 for 5) and Duncan Manners-Chapman (4-26) Babbacombe’s last seven wickets fell for just 26 runs as they were surprisingly dismissed for only 65 to give Chagford an unexpected win by 23 runs.
Chagford finished the season in 4th position and owed much to their inspirational skipper and opening bowler Del Lammonby and agressive batting of Divan Marais.
