Okehampton ladies’ thirds 1
Newquay ladies’ seconds 4
OKEHAMPTON third team faced stiff opposition in this league encounter when they hosted a strong, experienced Newquay side.
Oke began with flair and determination, fighting for possession and moving the ball swiftly around the pitch with Nicky Strawbridge pushing forward from midfield. Sophie Tripp looked menacing in front of goal and she opened the scoring, hammering the ball into the net to put Oke into the lead.
Newquay retaliated with their strong, forceful attackers making Oke’s joint player of the match Joey Drake tackle solidly in defence. Newquay forged ahead in numbers creating an overload of players which resulted in an equaliser.
Sophie Mugliston at right back, playing her first full game for the team, had a challenging match having to mark one of the more dominant Newquay forwards. Sophie stepped up to the challenge using her speed and fitness to channel her player out wide.
It was not all one way traffic with Oke continuing to move the ball quickly around the pitch when they had possession. Sandy Houston and Louise Watts were unlucky not to add to the Oke score sheet with shots going just wide of the posts.
In the second half Newquay piled on the pressure with some dangerous breaks forcing Daisy Morgan in goal to play several one-on-one situations with a Newquay attacker. Daisy’s goal keeping stopped these breaks in their tracks and earned her Oke’s joint player of the match.
While Oke were finding it difficult to convert their possession into goals, Newquay made no mistake in working the ball around to create spaces and add to the score sheet.
Oke fought to the end but could not add to their score resulting in a 4-1 win for Newquay.
