BOTH Tavistock and Okehampton Area Primary schools held their Sportshall athletics heats last week, resulting in some good performances by teams and individuals.
The Tavistock event — which took place over two days due to the number of teams who wanted to take part — was won by St Andrew’s Primary school A team from Buckland Mona-chorum with St Peter’s A second and Whitchurch third.
Notable individual performances were – standing long jump, girls, Ruth Perry (St Andrew’s) 1.96m; boys, Nicolas Maczugowski (St Peter’s) 1.94m. Speed bounce girls Charlotte Walker (St Peter’s) 59 in 20 secs; boys, Finn Jordan (St Andrew’s) 57 in 20 secs. Vertical jump girls, Ruth Perry 0.45m; boys Archie Davies (St Andrew’s) 0.43m. Chest push girls Alisha Overton (St Andrews) 6.25m; boys William White (Whitchurch) 6.50m.
The Okehampton Primary School A team won the Okehampton area schools event with small school Lew Trenchard gaining second place and a tie between South Tawton A and Okehampton B for third.
Individual winners were — speed bounce, girls, Sophie (Okehampton) 52 in 20secs; boys Grady and Thomas (Okehampton A) 50 in 20 secs. Standing long jump girls, Izzy (South Tawton A) 1.70m; boys Grady 1.88m. Vertical jump girls, Sophie 0.46m; boys Thomas (0.43m). Chest push girls, Reegan (Okehampton) 6.25m; boys, no outright winner with four boys reaching 6.0m. The top six teams from each area will compete for the title of West Devon champions at Tavistock College Sports Hall on January 18.
Joining the top three teams from each area will be Hatherleigh, Bridestowe, Bere Alston, Tavistock and Horrabridge A.
Mhairi McCall, on behalf of the organisers OCRA, thanked Keith and Jane Reed who officiated over the running events and the young sports leaders of Tavistock and Okehampton Colleges who ran the field events.
