IN response to the letter ('Recycling collections', May 9), we understand the frustration caused by what appears to be a simple solution to the sorting of recyclables.
The collection system in West Devon has been designed with convenience for the majority of residents in mind, whilst simultaneously producing high value materials for recycling markets. Separating the recyclable materials inside the containers means collections are quicker and materials are kept clean. This reduces costs and thus helps to keep council tax charges down. We therefore appreciate all efforts by residents to sort their recyclables.
It is worth noting that crews collect from 25,000 households across the borough and costs inevitably rise when services are tailored for individual needs.
May I suggest a happy compromise would be that Mr Blakeway continues to put his papers into the large food container if it is more convenient, and then empties the contents into the green recycling box on collection day.
Regarding card in garden waste sacks, recent changes to composting standards prevent us from accepting anything other than thick brown card for composting. Coloured card should be placed in the green recycling box or, if too large, taken to the recycling centres at Tavistock and Okehampton. We are about to introduce card banks in popular areas to increase the number of drop-off points.
If residents experience any problems or need further clarification please refer to the service guides which were sent out to all households in March or our website, http://www.westdevon.gov.uk">www.westdevon.gov.uk
Alternatively, contact us via [email protected]">[email protected] or call us on 01822 813657.
May we take this opportunity to thank all residents for their support in recycling items which would otherwise end up in landfill and which has lead to West Devon being one of the top recycling authorities in the country.
