PREPARATIONS are well underway for the annual Dowland Country Fair and Dog Show on Sunday, June 15, which last year attracted more than 2,000 visitors. The very best schedule of exhibits is being put on for the whole family, starting with simulated lurcher coursing at 9am for a 9.30am start. This year sees the return of Second World War planes, providing a spectacular fly past featuring five Second World War Austers. George Mudge will be carrying out sheep shearing demonstrations the old fashioned way using hand shears. North Devon Falconers, with over 60 years of experience, will be flying peregrine falcons, harris hawks, high bred falcons and owls. Running Deer will be at the event, providing workshops and demonstrations in green wood working, bushcraft and camp crafts, along with their shire horse Trelawney. North Devon Gun Dogs will be doing displays, and will run have-a-go scurries. The entertainment stage will include the Unity Gospel Choir, Hatherleigh Silver Band, the Ukulele Bashers, Cameron Mills, Okehampton College Swing Band and school choirs. Dog shows at the event are getting increasingly popular with excellent qualifiers for lurchers, terriers and family dogs. The family dog show will include a qualifier for the Buckham Fair's best rescue and rehomed championships.
