SOME?600 people went along to Okehampton's Super Sport Sunday last weekend, the finale of a week long sports festival which has involved 3,000 participants. Over 40 sports from football to roller skating, cycling to trampolining, rounders to tai chi, were on offer for people to try as taster sessions or compete at a more experienced level. There were competition and tournaments in netball, badminton, rounders and squash and cycle time trials were very popular. The event, the 12th of its kind, was organised by OCRA (Okehampton Community Recreation?Association). There was an introduction to Roller Derby, by the Grin 'N' Barum club of North Devon, which is a contact sport played by two teams of five members roller skating in the same direction around an elliptical track. Abseiling off Meldon Viaduct and watersports were also part of the week's activities. OCRA manager Stuart Lord said: 'This event attracted all ages and abilities throughout the course of the week and it was fantastic. 'We hope, as in previous years, that more people will take up a sport as a hobby because of this. 'The relaxed atmosphere meant that people could try a sport with no pressure just to see if they liked it. 'It was great to see everyone involved and all the clubs and organisations coming together. A big thank you to everyone for making it such a great community event and all the funders including 1 Life and Okehampton Town and Okehampton?Hamlets parish councils. There will be a golf tournament tomorrow (Friday) at Ashbury Golf Course between 5.30pm and 8pm as an extra event to the main sports festival. Anyone is welcome to turn up and have a go.
