Carlsberg South West Peninsula division one East
Alphington 1
Oke Argyle 2
THIS was a great team performance from Argyle against a team lying fifth in the table and there was no doubt that the three points were well deserved.
Okehampton looked solid at the back and built on this with fast breaks out of defence with Kel Fofala and Frankie Nomah-Koneh troubling the home side with their skill and pace.
Argyle stunned the home supporters after 10 minutes when a lovely move down the left saw the ball fall to Steve Kinsey on the edge of the box where he turned and crashed home a superb volley.
Two minutes later, Argyle saw a strong appeal for a penalty turned down when Nomah-Koneh outpaced the home defence and appeared to be hauled down on the edge of the box. Alphington came back strongly towards the end of the first half Argyle rode their luck when two deep crosses from the right both came back off Harry Geering's crossbar, but alertness by the strong defensive line of Matt Mortimer, Mark Burdus and Dan Johnston saw the ball cleared upfield and away from danger.
Alphington came at the start of the second half and the defence and midfield again had to work really hard to keep them at bay.
Managers Stuart Cann and Neil Agnew refreshed the legs in midfield by bringing on Stuart Entwhistle and Chris Wills and this paid dividends 20 minutes after the break when Alphington's defence failed to clear the ball properly.
Stuart Entwhistle showed great presence of mind to sidefoot the ball home as a poor clearance fell to him 25 yards out with the home keeper out of position. An injury to Mark Burdus saw Kev Gill replace him at the centre of defence where he slotted in perfectly.
Okehampton continued to trouble the home side on the counter attack and once again Nomah-Koneh appeared to be hauled down in the box after taking the ball past three home defenders.
As the match drew to a close, a poor challenge by Dan Johnston on the edge of the box saw Argyle give away a penalty, which was duly dispatched by Kenny Smith for the Alphington, but this was too late to affect the result and Argyle played out the remaining minute comfortably for a fine victory.
This was a great overall team performance from Okehampton with Ricky Wooldridge and Matt Mortimer both having fine games.
