WEST Devon electors were the most diligent in the South West for the European elections last Thursday (May 22) as just over 42% turned out to vote — the highest turnout of 38 authorities throughout the South West region. The UK Independence Party won the most votes, followed by the Conservative Party and then the Green Party. The South West region stretches from Bournmouth in the East to Gloucester in the North and the Isles of Scilly to the West. It also includes Gibraltar. Throughout the region there was an overall turnout of 37.04%. More than 18,000 electors turnout out to vote in West Devon. The results were: UK Independance Party (UKIP) — 6,172, Conservative Party — 6,019, Green Party — 2,277, Liberal Democrats — 1,570, Labour Party — 1,527, An independence from Europe — 243 votes, English Democrats — 164, British National Party — 112 votes. In the Torridge District there was a turnout of 38.6% with UKIP receiving the most votes with 8,011, followed by the Conservatives with 5,706 and the Green Party with 2,233 votes.
