The Environment Agency has said it believes that the smell from the East Okement River may be the result of a burst main water pipe.

The agency also added that South West Water has since undertaken an investigation to fix the pipe.

The town clerk reported the smell at the beginning of the month after residents raised concerns that there was sewage in the water due to the bad smell and dirty water colour.

The Environment Agency is responsible for protecting the environment across England, including rivers.
