THEATRES around the country can resume indoor performances from August 1 but what about Tavistock’s own beloved theatre and arts centre, The Wharf?

The Wharf, run by a dedicated band of volunteers, Friends and owner Angela Court, has been hit hard by Covid-19 and lockdown — but at long last everyone can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Art centres and theatres around the country had to cancel live bookings prior to lockdown on March 23 and entertainment establishments throughout the UK fell silent.

Then on July 17 much to everyone’s relief, the Government released its guidelines that theatres could open their doors and many premises have been busy trying to figure out how they can safely get their businesses back up and running again, whilst also following social distancing guidelines.

Angela, who has owned The Wharf since 2006, said: ‘We are full of ideas how to get everything back up and running — the trouble is that we have to try them out first as it’s never been tried and tested before but I am determined The Wharf will survive.’

On Monday, July 6 The Wharf Coffee Shop reopened and has been providing the business with income but a question mark hangs over its cinema and live music sessions as to how best to proceed and keep customers Covid-safe during the pandemic.

‘It will, like most things at the moment, be a gradual move towards the fully functioning Wharf that we know and love,’ said Angela.

A lot of new movie releases have been cancelled by production companies so Angela said there is a possibility that recorded live performances from the ballet, opera and more will be screened — but all seating will be distanced, people may be asked to wear masks and a system on entering and leaving the building will be installed.

Talks will resume in September and attendees will be ask to follow all social distancing measures.

Live music is currently being rebooked.

‘We provided entertainment for the people of Tavistock and the surrounding areas before and I hope we can continue to do that,’ added Angela.

‘We are working our socks off thinking of ways forward.

‘We have never had a situation like this and we are trying to find our way but I am determined that we will get there in the end.’

Angela continued: ‘We are extremely grateful to all our customers, Friends Of The Wharf and volunteers for their patience and generosity in bearing with us.

‘The Wharf fully intends to honour all tickets for postponed events.’
