A DUCHY College Stoke Climsland student from Kelly Bray and another from Tavistock were among the winners at the college’s recent 30th annual prize giving ceremony.

The ceremony was opened by Sharon Dudden, chair of the Duchy College Council of Governors, followed by Andrew Counsell, principal, who gave a report on the activities of the college over the last 12 months.

Guest of honour for the occasion was George Eustice MP, Minister of State for DEFRA, who presented the certificates, prizes and special awards.

Mr Eustice talked about the importance of education in the land-based sector and went on to say that the students should face the future with confidence now that the nation had decided to leave the EU and re-establish democratic self-government in the UK.

The award for Best All Round Student in the foundation learning department was won by Harry Yardley, 18, from Kelly Bray. Harry also won the Nichola Southwell Memorial Cup for most improved student in English. This award is in memory of Nichola Southwell who sadly died earlier this year. Nichola supported both staff and students to reach their full potential.

Harry said: ‘It has been a really nice day, I didn’t think I would win any awards! I have made lots of new friends at college and I am looking forward to coming back again next year.’

Lauren Bennatto from Tavistock won an award for best overall student in the public services department and top student on her Level 3 entry to the uniformed services (military academy) course.

Following the presentations, students and their guests were invited to enjoy an array of cakes and chat to staff about the student successes from the year as well as many final year students bidding a fond farewell to classmates and staff.

Mr Counsell said: ‘The past few weeks have been enormously rewarding, with the Duchy College open day and summer food festival attracting nearly 5,000 visitors, over 600 students attending the end of year summer ball and a celebration of the immense success of the students in this year’s prize giving ceremony. Prize day is a fantastic celebration of the students’ hard work and a way for parents, carers and friends to join in the success of the students. We wish them every success in their future careers and are delighted to have helped them on their way.’
