OKEHAMPTON Rotary are doing their best to put the 'oak' into Okehampton with a major tree planting project.

Okehampton's Rotary district has been promoting an initiative for each of its clubs to plant 50 trees, but Okehampton's Rotary club has gone above and beyond the call of duty by planting their 420th sapling over the last year in Simmons Park on January 30.

The initiative is part of a wider scheme by the Woodland Trust to encourage people to plant more trees in their communities.

Nils Westman, Okehampton Rotary's environmental manager, said: 'We have helped with environmental campaigns around the town for a while, including helping Okehampton Primary when they achieved their green flag status.

'This is the latest project, with saplings planted at the Pavilion in the Park, at Okehampton College for Growing our Future, and other places.'
